An aborted child's perspective

Billy's Story

It was a rainy October Sunday. I was attending a church service. The pastor standing at the front of the church was preaching all the familiar "Protect Life" month stuff. We've heard it all before. But, for some reason, something finally clicked for me. Maybe it was the way he was presenting it. Maybe it was the fact that I had realized just a few months earlier that my wife of four years and I would never have a child. Maybe it was the fact that I'm getting older and starting to see things more clearly. Perhaps my perspective is finally changing from "What's in it for me?" to "What difference can I make?"

It may have been all of those things. But, most certainly, it was the Holy Spirit speaking to me through my thoughts and feelings. "What about the baby's choice?" I thought. No one ever seems to talk about that? If, alas, we could give the millions of babies that have been aborted, worldwide, a voice of their own. What would they have to say about "pro-choice?"

That was the morning of the first day. By the end of that day, Billy's voice started taking shape. By the morning of the second day, "Billy's Song" was born. The name comes from a would-be son I never had. But the name could easily have been "Sarah's Song" or "Delilah's Song," or any other name you have in mind. Because it really doesn't matter, does it? What parent who ever chose "choice" rather than allow the child to be born ever thought to give the aborted child a name? For the sake of those children who will remain eternally nameless, they'll all be called Billy—for now.

Truth is, according to the Bible, God already knows the name of the child before he or she is born...even before the child's conception. So, even though we'll never know, God knows the names of the babies whose lives were cut short by their parents out of convenience, money, politics, or what have you. There simply isn't any reason worthy of taking a life. It's against the laws of creation. It's against the laws of God. Even though we choose to shove their memory aside, God doesn't. He knows who they are, and He calls them by name. We'll call them, "Billy."
